The “Dog Days” of summer are here and humans aren’t the only ones who are trying to find ways to beat the heat. It’s important to remember our furry friends during these hot times of the year as well. With that in mind, here are a few ways to help your pup stay cool.
Lots of water
Make sure your pet has access to clean, fresh, cool water at all times. If they are outside, keep the water in a shaded area to ensure it doesn’t get too hot. Also, make sure the water bowl is cleaned daily. Water is necessary for drinking on a hot day but can also be used for play. Hook up a sprinkler or fill up a kiddy pool to help your dog cool down.
Limit time outdoors
It can be difficult to keep your dog inside during the summer but in extreme heat, you should limit their time outside, especially during the hottest parts of the day. If they need a walk or exercise try and do it in the early morning hours or late evening when temperatures are manageable. Make sure to bring a bottle of water for yourself and your pup if you are going on a long walk.
Test yourself first
If you do have to take your pup out during the day make sure you test the temperature of the asphalt. Concrete and asphalt can get very hot, so make sure to walk around on it barefoot or test the temperature on the back of your hand. If it is too hot for you, it is too hot for your pup as well. Extreme temperatures can burn or blister their paw pads and create irritation and infection. Also, watch your dog for signs that concrete or other surfaces are too hot. If they don’t want to move or are avoiding certain areas, it is likely those areas are too hot for their paws.
Ice ice baby
Let your dog chomp on some ice cubes or put ice in their water to keep it cool. Also you can make dog friendly smoothies and freeze them in ice cube trays for a sweet, cool treat. If your dog has weak teeth try crushed ice cubes or a non-flavored snow cone.
