COVID-19 is caused by SARS-CoV-2 has impacted our lives, jobs, families, and relationships for over a year now. Vaccinations have hit the market, and healthcare workers have been working tirelessly on vaccinating, and treating patients with COVID-19. Medications have had some effect on the virus but there is no cure.
A study conducted by researchers in Chicago may have made a huge breakthrough in COVID-19 studies in how COVID-19 affects the lungs.
“Marsha Rosner, the University of Chicago in Illinois researcher, and her colleagues reported on their discoveries on March 10 in a pre-print version of the research paper “Cannabidiol Inhibits SARS-CoV-2 Replication and Promotes the Host Innate Immune Response.”
CBD is a compound found in cannabis plants. CBD has a lot of benefits, but the biggest one may be that CBD can inhibit COVID-19 in human lung cells.
“CBD acts after cellular infection, inhibiting viral gene expression and reversing many effects of SARS-CoV-2 on host gene transcription. CBD induces interferon expression and up-regulates its antiviral signaling pathway.”
The study also stated that patients who have taken CBD were infected less than those that didn’t take CBD in similarly matched pairs.
So far CBD is the only compound that had the potential to lower the viral infection compared to cannabinoids similar to CBD.
